School System

In Luxembourg’s multicultural society, the acquisition of foreign languages is a basic requirement for communication. Therefore, it is standard practice for schools in Luxembourg to teach French, German and English. To ensure that this is possible, language instruction within the school system – which includes kindergarten along with primary and secondary levels – begins in the early years of childhood.

University of Luxembourg

Founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg is built directly on the Bologna System. In addition to high-quality bachelors and masters degree programs, it gives special attention to doctoral studies and research in promising areas for the future.

The university has a Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC), a Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education (FLSHASE), and a Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF)

Parts of the university are slated to occupy a site in Esch-Belval, whose Cité des Sciences (“City of Sciences”) will promote synergies between academic study and research.

Research

In addition to the university’s research facilities, the government of Luxembourg is aiming to support other research projects in cooperation with industry. While added impetus is being provided through the Fonds National de la Recherche (National Research Fund) within the public sector, the same is being done in the private sector through the Société Nationale de Crédit et d’Investissement (SNCI – National Credit and Investment Corporation) and the Agence Nationale pour la Promotion de l’Innovation et de la Recherche (National Agency for Innovation and Research).
